WILSHIRE GRAND CENTER FOLLOW-UP

With a follow up to 2016 SEAOSC presentation, Principal Peter Maranian from Brandow & Johnston, Inc. will take a look at the construction of the tallest building west of the Mississippi's river, Wilshire Grand Center. Both Maranian and Leonard Joseph (Thornton Tomasetti) will discuss the partnership between the two firms, multiple city approval phases, the challenges and difficulties faced in executing the project such as the detailing and construction for the sail and spire, tower cranes, tenant improvements, and other retrospectives on this remarkable structure.

Leonard Joseph

Principal
Thornton Tomasetti

With more than 40 years of structural experience following a BS from Cornell and MS and MBA degrees from Stanford, Leonard Martin Joseph has analyzed, designed and reviewed numerous high-rise buildings including the Petronas Towers and Taipei 101, sports facilities including the San Francisco Ballpark, hangars, hotels, historic buildings, manufacturing facilities and parking garages. He works with structural steel, conventional, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete, masonry, wood and light gage framing. For buildings around the world, Len deals with seismic, wind and other environmental hazards, and incorporates local construction practices into his designs. For the Wilshire Grand Center tower he led the advanced analysis effort for Performance Based Seismic Design and established, sized and conceptually detailed the building frame, shear wall reinforcement and uniquely configured outriggers with constructability, performance and long-term differential shortening in mind. Active in technical development and teaching, Len lectures and writes articles and books on structure for both technical and general audiences.
